School starts August 22nd in Tulsa and a record number of public school students won’t have to worry about catching the bus or even having to wear the district’s new mandatory school uniforms.
TPS parents at virtual school orientation Thursday say with the on-line education is one way to not have to worry about class size, because their students won’t even sit in a classroom.

Right now the virtual school, which is has a “classroom” inside Promenade Mall, has about 150 students from Tulsa. Enrollment just got underway and officials expect to see around 300 to 350 students on-line by the end of the semester.

He also praises online learning as an innovative educational choice that lets students receive individualized instruction. As the head of an Oklahoma City-based online learning provider that partners with schools and districts statewide to offer Oklahoma Virtual High School, I’ve seen firsthand how online education has helped state students graduate and succeed.

Debates about school choice have focused on the critical challenge of helping kids trapped in bad schools transfer into better ones, whether by open enrollment, new charter schools, scholarships to attend private school and homeschooling.

But the debate is quickly changing. Future conversations are likely to be about customizing education to best suit children’s individual learning styles and finding the right learning environment to let children reach their highest potential.

Consider the exciting innovations that are occurring with online or virtual learning. Across the country, more than 1 million children are participating in various forms of online learning. These programs include full-time virtual schools, supplemental online courses and classroom-based online instruction.

An embattled virtual charter school startup is now back on the road to operating thanks to a recent change in state law and a new alliance with a small Okfuskee County school.

Sponsorship by Graham Public School near Weleetka means that Epic One on One Charter School will soon be enrolling as many as 2,000 public school students from across the state for the 2011-12 academic year.

“We’re real excited to finally be able to be getting our school up and running and to begin to fill a gap that exists in the public school system in our state,” said David Chaney, founder of Epic.

Epic had hoped to open its strictly online program in August for the 400 or so students whose parents had signed them up, including 100 from the Tulsa area. But the school ended up in a legal battle when its purported sponsor, the University of Central Oklahoma, denied having a valid charter school agreement.
